Why Use CSS

CSS is used to define styles for your web pages, including the design, layout and variations in display for different devices and screen sizes.

CSS Solved a Big Problem

HTML was NEVER intended to contain tags for formatting a web page! HTML was created to describe the content of a web page, like: <h>and <p>. When tags like <font>, and color attributes were added to the HTML 3.2 specification, it started a nightmare for web developers. Development of large websites, where fonts and color information were added to every single page, became a long and expensive process. To solve this problem, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created CSS. CSS removed the style formatting from the HTML page!

CSS Saves a Lot of Work!

The style definitions are normally saved in external .css files. With an external stylesheet file, you can change the look of an entire website by changing just one file!

CSS Syntax

CSS selector
A CSS rule consists of a selector and a declaration block. The selector points to the HTML element you want to style. The declaration block contains one or more declarations separated by semicolons. Each declaration includes a CSS property name and a value, separated by a colon. Multiple CSS declarations are separated with semicolons, and declaration blocks are surrounded by curly braces.

CSS Selectors

A CSS selector selects the HTML element(s) you want to style. CSS selectors are used to "find" (or select) the HTML elements you want to style. We can divide CSS selectors into five categories:

  • Simple selectors (select elements based on name, id, class)
  • Combinator selectors (select elements based on a specific relationship between them)
  • Pseudo-class selectors (select elements based on a certain state)
  • Pseudo-elements selectors (select and style a part of an element)
  • Attribute selectors (select elements based on an attribute or attribute value)

Three Ways to Insert CSS

When a browser reads a style sheet, it will format the HTML document according to the information in the style sheet. There are three ways of inserting a style sheet:

  • External CSS
  • Internal CSS
  • Inline CSS

External CSS

With an external style sheet, you can change the look of an entire website by changing just one file! Each HTML page must include a reference to the external style sheet file inside the <link> element, inside the head section. An external style sheet can be written in any text editor, and must be saved with a .css extension. The external .css file should not contain any HTML tags.

Internal CSS

An internal style sheet may be used if one single HTML page has a unique style. The internal style is defined inside the <style> element, inside the head section. External styles are defined within the <link> element, inside the <head>section of an HTML page.

Inline CSS

An inline style may be used to apply a unique style for a single element. To use inline styles, add the style attribute to the relevant element. The style attribute can contain any CSS property.

CSS Comments

CSS comments are not displayed in the browser, but they can help document your source code. Comments are used to explain the code, and may help when you edit the source code at a later date. Comments are ignored by browsers. A CSS comment is placed inside the <style> element, and starts with /* and ends with */.

CSS height and width Values

The height and width properties may have the following values:

  • auto - This is default. The browser calculates the height and width
  • lenght-Defines the height/width in px, cm etc.
  • %-Defines the height/width in percent of the containing block
  • initial- Sets the height/width to its default value
  • inherit- The height/width will be inherited from its parent value

The CSS Box Model

All HTML elements can be considered as boxes. In CSS, the term "box model" is used when talking about design and layout. The CSS box model is essentially a box that wraps around every HTML element. It consists of: margins, borders, padding, and the actual content. The image below illustrates the box model:
Explanation of the different parts:

  • Content - The content of the box, where text and images appear
  • Padding - Clears an area around the content. The padding is transparent
  • Border - A border that goes around the padding and content
  • Margin - Clears an area outside the border. The margin is transparent
